ABOUT THE HERATH FOUNDATION
The founding members of the Herath family have always considered hardships of life as a blessing for success. Led by their mother and assisted by their father, they went to Japan for higher education. They preserved a part of their scholarship allowance and established the foundation in 1985 for the benefit of children following a concept – the importance of allocating, before each meal, a portion of one’s meal for others – taught by their parents. The two brothers studied under the free education system, funded by the general public in Sri Lanka. They later received Monbusho scholarships to continue post- graduate studies in Japan. They believe that scholarships are not for individuals but for the country, and this scheme foundation is one of their payback to Sri Lanka.
The Herath foundation was registered as an NGO in Japan in 1996 and the USA in 2003.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
“In a society where equanimity and coexistence have been neglected and where people look only upon the dark side of life, we came in search of light through education. It is our hope that through these efforts we can help guide society into a loving, caring, peaceful, and happy one. With a unified purpose, lets move forward for the common interest executing our duties in a responsible manner."
- Prof. Susantha Herath

Sri Lanka is an island of 65,610 sq km off the Southeastern coast of India in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Its original name was Sinhale. Being a beautiful tropical island, it is known as the "pearl of the Indian Ocean. Sinhale has a proud history of over 2500 years. The ancient ruins which situated throughout the country are the living proof of that great history, and those ruins have their own story of that glorious history and its culture. Sinhale is a country with beautiful landscapes. The outstanding feature of the topography of the country is a mountainous mass in the south central part of the country. In the upland area are two plateaus, Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains, which are major centers of commercial tea plantations. The plateaus are noted for their cool, healthful climate. North of the mountains, and extending south, is an arid and gently rolling plain known as the dry zone. Tropical rainforests and its wildlife make the island even more beautiful. It has the luxury of having warm sunny beaches around the country. Every year, many tourists visit Sinhale to feel this natural beauty.

Pioneers of the Herath Foundaton, Mr. Kiri Banda Herath, The All-Island Justice of the Peace, and his beloved wife Mrs. Yapa Herath, a school teacher, taught that “darkness of poverty can be eliminated by the light of intelligence.” They were treated with honor and great respect. The founding members of the Herath family have always considered hardships of life as a blessing for success. Led by their mother and assisted by their father, they went to Japan for higher education. They preserved a part of their scholarship allowance and establish the foundation in 1985 for the benefit of children following a concept – the importance of allocating, before each meal, a portion of one’s meal for others – taught by their parents. The dedication and services provided for others by the foundation have been highly appreciated by both national and international organizations and individuals during the last two decades. Three Herath brothers founded Herath Foundation with a dream of moving up 1,000,000 families from poverty line by 2025 and assist younger generation, and for the betterment of Sri Lanka.
